Private Drive in Spalding

I do like the odd Tarmac drive, I like it when my family is doing it as well. I go on the roller, Alan or Ian hand lay it (my 2 brothers) if machine laid, Simon my other brother would be there (but he’s not). George my son doing what we all did, running around doing everything, and getting shouted at.

This is an old concrete drive, I’m not keen to lay tarmac on concrete, because it looks fine over the first few years, then, where the concrete joins, with an expansion joint, a crack in the tarmac may show.

What we’ve done is fill all holes with the same material, i.e concrete, tar sprayed the concrete area with K140 tack coat (bitumen emulsion) and layed 6mm medium textured wearing course at 30-40mm thick.

Gaul Road March – Cambridgeshire

Gaul Road March – Cambridgeshire

Started this job in Gaul Road March, on the 26th August 2015. Got 8 weeks to complete. 240 metres long 3 metres deep and build 5 concrete manholes.

This has to be one of the worst roads I’ve ever worked on. There is about 5″ of Tarmac sitting on 8″ of sand and gravel, then 18″ of peat on clay. On top of that we have every Tom, Dick and Harry putting their services in.   Two raising mains (pump sewer pipe) about 1.3m deep. The only good thing was, we were digging in clay, this stands up on its own, any other material and we would have had everyone else’s trench in ours.

But then again this is what I love about the job, the challenging aspects of it.

More information coming soon.
